How to choose fabric for wholesale medical scrubs

Compare stretch polyester, poly-cotton twill and performance jersey for hospital and clinic programmes — and what to specify in your tech pack.
Fabric choice drives comfort, wash life and returned goods. For wholesale medical scrubs, start with the end use: long theatre lists, ward walking, outpatient clinics or aged-care — each loads the garment differently.
Four-way stretch polyester/spandex (often 95/5 at about 190–200 gsm) is the most requested modern scrub fabric. It recovers after movement, resists wrinkling and suits jogger and tapered silhouettes. Confirm stretch recovery, colour fastness to industrial wash, and pilling after repeated cycles in your tech pack.
Poly-cotton twill (commonly 65/35 at 180–210 gsm) remains popular where buyers want a classic hand-feel and strong print/embroidery surface. It is usually more breathable in hot wards but wrinkles more than stretch poly. Ask for shade continuity across bulk lots and for shrinkage tolerances after first wash.
Performance jersey and underscrub knits work under scrub tops or as scrub tees. Specify GSM, wicking finish and whether antibacterial or quick-dry treatments are required. These finishes must survive your laundry protocol — request wash-test notes with the pre-production sample.
In the tech pack, list: fibre blend %, GSM, construction, Pantone or lab-dip approval method, finish, and minimum colour-fastness grades. Approve a washed sample before bulk. That single step prevents most fabric disputes on first export programmes to the USA, Europe or Australia.
Writing the fabric section of a tech pack
List fibre %, GSM, construction, stretch direction, Pantone method and minimum colour-fastness grades. Attach a physical swatch when possible so mills and sewing lines share one reference.
Matching fabric to silhouette
Joggers and tapered pants prefer stretch recovery; classic straight pants can use poly-cotton successfully. Jackets and lab coats may use different GSM than base scrub tops — keep the programme coherent but not identical.
Next step
Compare moisture-wicking scrub sets and antimicrobial medical scrubs, then request a fabric quotation.
Frequently asked questions
Which fabric is best for modern scrub suits?
Four-way stretch polyester/spandex around 190–200 gsm is the most requested for mobility and wrinkle resistance. Confirm wash recovery in your tech pack.
When should I choose poly-cotton?
Poly-cotton twill suits buyers who want a classic hand-feel and strong embroidery surface, accepting more wrinkling than stretch poly.
Do finishes survive industrial wash?
Moisture-wicking, antimicrobial and stain-release finishes must be tested against your laundry protocol — approve a washed sample first.
